postheadericon Coughing Up Phlegm? Help!

When you cough and it is accompanied with mucus or sputum (phlegm) it is a sign that you have a infection in your lungs. Coughing up mucus can be caused by different things such as allergies, common cold, bacterial infections or the cause of smoking. Coughing phlegm most commonly occurs in the mornings.

The reason why people are coughing up mucus could be divided into two main categories. Lets look at some information below to see what might be responsible for that problem.

Different infections and viruses

People who complain about mucus build up in the morning usually suffer from viral or some bacterial infections such as the common cold or influenza. If these viruses find a way to your throat or nasal passages the bacteria start to produce a large amount of mucus. That usually happens during the night when you aren’t drinking anything or clearing your throat. That is the reason when one wakes up and needs to cough up all that build up phlegm.

Bronchitis, allergies or asthma are conditions where the body builds a lot of mucus. When your airways are inflamed by a virus it’s commonly referred to as bronchitis. If you inhale particles which cause allergic reaction such as dust, toxic fumes or some chemicals it can cause the airways to swell up. Asthma attack can also be triggered by this. Other reasons why one might have mucus in their lungs are different viral conditions such as strep throat, sinusitis or lung infections.

Ones own fault

Smoking is one of the most common reasons why people cough up phlegm. People who smoke a lot usually cough up phlegm that is brown and looks disgusting. Even after you quit smoking you will still cough up that brown substance for a while. It is normal because the body tries to get rid of all the bad toxins that the smoking has caused. People who have recently quit smoking sometimes cough up black mucus, because the body is getting rid of the tar that you get from smoking.

Another dangerous vice is alcohol. Alcohol dries your membranes and because of that the membranes counter-actively start to produce a large amount of mucus to fight the dryness.

There are some effective ways to make things better: the first and the most important rule is to stay well-hydrated at all times. Fluid intake helps loosening phlegm and makes it easier to cough it out. Another good advice is to gargle with warm salt water

Surprisingly food is one of the causes that will make you cough up phlegm. There are certain food groups that are suggested for people to avoid to help with the mucus problem. One of the most known foods that cause the problem the most are dairy products. Even eating meat could cause the problem and specially fried greasy foods.

postheadericon Symptoms Of Iron Deficiency Anemia

If a person has a limited number of red blood cells, he has a strong tendency to acquire anemia. Medical experts believe that when there is limited amount of oxygen being provided to the entire body, a lot of body organs would malfunction. There are a lot of causes of anemia. However, one that is notable when it comes to causing anemia is iron deficiency.

Iron-deficiency anemia is a result of losing iron due to intestinal bleeding. It can also be experienced when there is no enough absorption of iron. More than half of anemia cases refer to iron-deficiency anemia as it is the most popular type throughout the world. Children have no excuse for iron-deficiency anemia especially when they got struck of parasites like hookworms or roundworms. These parasites attack the children’s intestines causing them to lose blood and excreted through the stools. Sadly, it is hard to track this phenomenon unless the children would complain about stomach or intestinal problems.

Pregnant women may also suffer from iron-deficiency anemia when they give birth. This is possible because they would definitely lose a significant amount of blood during the delivery of the baby. There are rare cases for anemia to be experienced during monthly periods unless the release of blood is heavy. However, for women over 50 years old, they may suffer from anemia due to chronic gastrointestinal bleeding. The bleeding can be caused by ailments like gastric ulcer.

Infants are not spared of iron-deficiency anemia. Medical experts tell that it is better to acquire anemia in the later stages of life rather than during infancy. When mothers do not give the nutrients that is due to infants through breastfeeding, iron-deficiency can be made possible which would affect the mental and motor developments of the infants.

The usual symptoms that children and adults show when getting iron-deficiency anemia are constipation, hair loss, depression, numbness, and sleepiness. Constipation is the result of intestinal malfunctions and poor diet. Hair loss is significantly experienced by women prior their menopausal stage due to iron depletion. Numbness and depression are felt along with the loss of energy. Those who showed these symptoms had a little brain dysfunction because of lack of iron amounts which push organs in the brain and other body areas to function well. Sleepiness is nonetheless a result of being restless due to insufficiency of iron.

postheadericon Misused Fitness Terms

This is dedicated to explain fitness related terms that are often misunderstood and misused. When discussing fitness related topics, or any topic for that matter, it is important for everyone to use the same terminology. Otherwise, using terms in different ways can easily lead to a miscommunication or misinterpretation of the information, various terms that have specific meanings in the health in fitness, but are often misused in all forms of media, even by people who call themselves experts in the field.

The 4 terms covered today all have something to do with lifting weights. People often think some of these terms are the same, but they each have specific meanings and they should not be used interchangeably.

1. Resistance Training – This is a very general term that covers a wide variety of activities. Resistance training includes any type of exercise where your muscles have to overcome a resistance, regardless of the type of resistance used. Naturally, any activity that involves lifting traditional weights is a form of resistance training, because the weights are the resistance, but weights are far from the only type of resistance. Resistance can also come in the form of bands/cables, medicine balls, etc. Even body weight exercises such as push-ups or squats are forms of resistance training, because in those exercises certain muscles have to overcome the weight of your body and your body acts as the resistance. Technically, the term resistance training could be used to describe virtually any type of exercise, but most people do not classify sporting activities as resistance training, unless lifting weights is a primary component of the sport. To simplify things, other than traditional cardio exercises such as treadmill walking, virtually every exercise performed in a gym type setting is considered resistance training.

2. Weightlifting – This is probably the term that causes the most confusion, even though it appears to be fairly self-explanatory. The issue is that lifting weights is not the same as weightlifting. Lifting weights does refer to any exercise that uses weights (meaning metal weights or weight machines, usually not other forms of resistance). Weightlifting, on the other hand, refers to a particular sport that involves the competitive performance of two exercises: the clean and jerk (one exercise) and the snatch. People often incorrectly refer to weightlifting as Olympic lifting, but Olympic lifting actually only refers to weightlifting during the Olympics. In other words, you wouldn’t say that you were going outside to do some Olympic running or going to the community pool for some Olympic swimming, but that is exactly what people are doing when they refer to weightlifting as Olympic lifting. Additionally someone should only be called a weightlifter when they participate in the sport of weightlifting. For instance, I have been lifting weights pretty much year-round for over 19 years and have included the weightlifting exercises in some of my routines, but I would never call myself a weightlifter. There are a lot of people who lift weights, but not many people who are actually weightlifters.

3. Powerlifting – This term is similar to weightlifting in the sense that it refers to a particular sport that involves lifting weights, but people do not misuse this term nearly as much as they do the term weightlifting. However, there are still a large number of people who do not know what powerlifting actually is. Powerlifting is a competition where a person performs 3 different exercises: bench press, squat, and deadlift. As with weightlifting, the goal is to perform only 1 rep of each exercise with as much weight as possible. Competitors are given multiple attempts at each exercise and the highest weight successfully completed for each exercise is added together to produce the total score. There are also multiple weight classes, as there are in boxing, so athletes of different weights and sizes can all compete with a chance of winning. Also, the term powerlifter only applies to someone who competes in the sport of powerlifting.

4. Bodybuilding – Again, this is a term that refers to a particular sport, but bodybuilding it is different from weightlifting and powerlifting, because lifting weights is not the focus of a bodybuilding competition. Bodybuilding does have different classes of competitors just like weightlifting and powerlifting, but it is not about the act of performing exercises as it is with the other sports. Instead, competitors are judged on the way their body looks. Bodybuilders have to perform a variety of different poses to show off their body and they are judged on things like the size, definition (how much their muscles stand out / having minimal fat), and symmetry (proportion) of their muscles. People who are bodybuilders exercise specifically to improve the way their body looks, so they can earn higher scores in competition. Consequently, bodybuilders are more concerned about how their body looks than how it actually functions. This is one of the reasons why training for bodybuilding is very different from training to improve athletic performance or general health.
